Hi my name is Jason. My topic for this blog is democracy. In the early republic there wasn't democracy in any recognizable form. The founding fathers didn't believe in democracy in the fullest way. Even though they wanted to be liberated from England they didn't want the people to run things entirely. This link further explains my reasoning for why the founding fathers didn't follow democracy. They believe that that democracy couldn't go for the long run. They wanted to protect minorities.

Colonies

Hi this is Jason. As  you remember from  my previous topic I chose democracy. Some had more democratic forms of government, like town hall meetings (I think already mentioned), like in New England. But democracy as we know if did not exist. Of course women could not vote, even free Blacks could not vote. In many places only landowners, nobody who rented or anything like that could vote. Only certain religious groups could vote in some colonies, or others were excluded. Catholics could not vote in some colonies, but ruled in Maryland. I'm not sure if some groups like the Quakers took part in politics, or at least until they got involved in the slavery issue.

Welcome

Its Jason. My history teacher has told us to blog about a specific theme. I have chosen to write about democracy. I picked it because it is related to the US. This link addresses the current state of democracy in America. It is very critical of the system, especially the ability of corporations to donate money to political campaigns. This makes politicians less responsive to voters than donors. I don't like this because it gives me less of a voice in public affairs.
